Providing natural, high quality beef that protects and sustains the environment.
A Conceptual Ecological Restoration Practice for Sustainable Agriculture at the Heirloom Cattle Ranch |
|
- The Heirloom Ranch converted the conventional ranch from high input and high productivity to one that requires fewer inputs (water, fertilizer, pesticides) and fewer cattle.
- The objective was to create a sustainable ranch that is certified organic. It is thought that cattle managed in this way will result in higher quality meat.
- The conversion depends on using native plant species that can tolerate lower inputs and low-density and low-frequency grazing. Ecological restoration creates conditions conducive to a sustainable organic cattle ranch.
- Restoration with native plant species leads to a sustainable and organic cattle ranch that also obtains value from the restored plants themselves.
- The Heirloom Ranch has four major ecological zones: 1) deep soils, 2) saline-alkali, 3) riparian, and 4) pond.
- A significant value of the sustainable organic ranch is that water requirements will be reduced 80%. The excess water will be used to enhance the riparian and wetland zones on the Heirloom Ranch.
- As part of our quality program we use the best available methodologies to test and certify our beef to be free of residues, including:
- Organochlorine Pesticides (Lindane, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endosulfan, DDT and DDE)
- Antibiotics (Penicillin, Gentamicin Sulfate, Tilmicosin)
